Sunny May 2019 so far….

Following along in good tradition from April, this May has turned out to be another sunny one so far.

Sunshine total for the month has passed 200 hours and now stands at 201.2 hours. This brings the spring sunshine total to 563 hours, and the annual total to 762 hours.

Months with sunshine greater than 200 hours always have a ‘sunny feel’ to them (for want of a better phrase). And can occur in any month from April to September.

The number of times months since 2006 have exceeded 200 hours sunshine (though many more have come close):
April = 5
May = 8
June = 10
July = 8
August = 6
September = 3

The average sunshine for May for the last 14 years has been 204.2 hours.

Sunny May Day

Unbroken sunshine all day has pushed the monthly sunshine total passed 100 hours. As of 20:15 today the total is 105 hours.

Mind you, the temperature never got that high despite the intense, scorching sunshine as there was a stiff breeze blowing in off the sea that kept the temperature pegged back to a maximum of 16.1C.

The annual sunshine total now at 665 hours. To this date last year there had been 542 hours, and the year went on to a total of 1938 hours.

Summary for March 2018

A rather remarkable month after the relatively benign conditions through the winter. The dullest, wettest and snowiest March in my record. In fact it was the snowiest of any month and put December 2010 to shame. The 2nd coldest March after 2013 (5.2C) and the first ‘ice day’ on the 1st since the 25th December 2010. A very high amount of sunless days and no cloudless days!

March 2018 is going to be a dull, cold and very wet month

Sunshine running way, way below average. This could well end up my dullest March since I started recording sunshine in 2006.

It has also been my wettest March by a wide margin, and could end up my coldest.

Definitely cold, wet and dull. But that doesn’t mean it has been uneventful. This March has been one of the most interesting and varied months I can remember.

1st – 23rd
Mean temp = 6.1C (over 2C colder than my eLTA)
Rainfall = 132 mm (230%!!!)
Sunshine = 67 hours (46%).

‘Spring Snow!’

Difficult to tell how deep the snow is here as it is all blown around but as a rough guess there’s about 20 cm. The snow started off light this morning but has been steadily getting heavier and heavier.

The wind has also picked up through the afternoon and blowing all that snow around.

Quite a few roads now blocked, especially on high ground where there are probably blizzards.

Worse than the 19th/20th December 2010 because of the wind.

Maximum today so far is -2.4C.

And it is still snowing!

Summary for February 2018

An interesting and varied month! Colder, drier and sunny than normal. Coldest mean monthly temperature, and the highest amount of air and grass frosts recorded of any month since December 2010. Sunniest February in record (2005).

February Sunshine

Passed 100 hours of sunshine today putting this February in the sunny(ish) category. My sunniest February was in 2008 with 130 hours.

Unbroken sunshine all day so far and today’s total is likely to exceed 10 hours for the first time since the 3rd October, though several days have come close over the last week.

With just a very light breeze and a maximum of 7.3C, it was a lovely day and quite pleasant to be sat outside in the warm sunshine. The sun’s elevation now above 30°.

Still, the monthly average temperature is below normal and likely to fall further. This month now holds the record for the greatest number of air frosts in February (12 so far), and the largest number since December 2010 (though none of the frosts have been severe).

1st – 24th
Mean minimum = 1.1C
Mean maximum = 9.2C
Mean = 5.2C
Rain = 37.6 mm
Sunshine = 107 hours.

15th February 2018 – Cold(ish) So Far

It has been a cold February so far (coldest mean temperature since December 2010) but the days have generally been near average, it is the nights with their high prevalence of frosts that have dragged the mean temperature right down.

It seems at the moment that the mild scenario forecast is winning out and if so, the second half could end up rather different.

1st – 15th February 2018
Mean minimum = 0.5C
Mean maximum = 8.9C
Mean = 4.7C
Rain = 36 mm
Sunshine = 62 hours.

The extra strength of the sun is becoming very noticeable now and today’s prolonged afternoon sunshine helped the temperature up to 11.8C.

12th February 2018 – A Sparking Late Winter’s Day

I don’t think winter days could get much better than today.

Crystal clear air with superb visibility; fantastic, towering cloudscapes and dazzling, warm sunshine. With hardly a breath of wind and a maximum of 9.8C, how could it get any better!

And a rare thing happened, there must have been a snow shower overnight and it left a dusting on the grass and pavements. The first snow I’ve seen on the ground (albeit a micro-thin layer) since the 26th December 2010.

As soon as the sun was up it all melted. Still, it was the 6th air frost this month, though none have been severe.

And it has been a reasonably sunny start to February with today’s 6.2 hours bringing the monthly total to 51 hours.

This month so far has the coldest mean temperature since December 2010. But the 2nd half of February is often a fair bit warmer than the first half due to the increasing strength of the sun, so that may change.
